EDITOR’S NOTE: Richie Edmonds represents District 1 on the St. George City Council.

Conservatives believe government should be limited, accountable, and focused on the responsibilities only government can fulfill. Protecting the integrity of our elections is one of those responsibilities.

As a small-business owner and member of the St. George City Council, I know that responsible leadership requires planning ahead. Waiting for essential equipment to fail before replacing it is not fiscal discipline. It is an invitation to higher costs, unnecessary disruptions, and diminished public confidence.

Louisiana’s voting machines have served our state for more than 35 years. Their longevity is a testament to the election officials who have maintained them, but no technology lasts forever. Modernizing this equipment is a practical investment in secure, reliable, and transparent elections.

Congress should provide $400 million for Election Security Grants in the Fiscal Year 2027 Financial Services and General Government appropriations process. This federal partnership would help Louisiana and other states replace aging systems, strengthen cybersecurity, and protect taxpayers from carrying the entire burden alone.

This is not an argument for bigger government. It is an argument for competent government. Election officials need dependable equipment and modern security tools to defend our systems against technical failures and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Republicans have consistently fought for voter identification, accurate voter rolls, and strong safeguards against fraud. Those protections must be supported by infrastructure capable of administering our election laws securely and effectively.

Americans should have confidence that every legal vote is counted accurately and that our election systems are protected. Investing wisely today will help preserve that confidence for generations to come.
